Boys of 1936 Shell House Tour

Come join in this unique opportunity for an inside look at the legacy of Daniel James Brown’s New York Times bestseller The Boys in the Boat.

This 2-hour tour begins at UW Rowing’s Conibear Shellhouse and concludes at the 1918 World War I airplane hangar known to the “Boys” as the ASUW Shell House.

At Conibear Shellhouse, the primary home for Washington Rowing since 1949 and the hub for all student-athletes since its renovation in 2005, you’ll see the lettermen’s jackets of Joe Rantz and Don Hume, the IRA and Berlin Olympics medals of Joe Rantz, and the famed Husky Clipper shell.

Then take a 15-minute lakeside walk back in time to the ASUW Shell House that was in use in 1936. Tour the Shell House and hear plans for its future. View the Willapa Spirit Honor Canoe, which honors Emmett Oliver, a beloved Native educator in Washington state and a primary founder of the annual tribal Canoe Journey. The Canoe was commissioned by Marylin Oliver Bard and crafted by John Edward Smith, and the external art was designed by UW professor Marvin Oliver. Marylin Oliver Bard will be one of our speakers.

If you like, bring a sack lunch to enjoy lakeside after the tour.
