Give & Take: When Free Speech Might Not Be So Free

The University of Oklahoma fired an instructor after she gave a zero to a student’s gender essay that cited the Bible. Texas A&M told a philosophy professor he couldn’t use passages from Plato in one of his courses. Closer to home, a UW professor was reprimanded for putting a parody land acknowledgment in his syllabus. What’s going on at our universities? Join Political Science Professor James Long for a lively discussion on threats to free speech at universities and thoughts about how to preserve the First Amendment.

NOTE: Give and Take is structured as a live discussion, NOT a lecture with a Q&A. It will not be recorded or simultaneously streamed on Zoom. Please come with ideas and opinions as well as questions and be prepared to dive in with an expert facilitator.

ACCESSIBILITY NOTES: The HUB building is accessible by ramps and has elevators. Speakers will not use voice amplification for this small-group discussion. Learn more about HUB accessibility, including assisted hearing devices, at this link.
