Thriving: Brain Health 101

From the underlying biology of an individual’s experience with stress and trauma to their access to social support, brain health and mental health are delicately intertwined. Dr. Jürgen Unützer will explore cognitive aging, brain wellness, and brain resilience, as well as the steps Washington state is taking to close the gaps in providing effective care to those with “broken” brains and those affected by substance use disorder.

Jürgen Unützer, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist, chair of UW Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Director of the Garvey Institute for Brain Health Solutions, and the Paul G. Ramsey Endowed Chair for Brain Health Solutions.

Dr. Unützer is an internationally recognized psychiatrist and health services researcher. His work focuses on integrating mental health and general medical services and on translating research on evidence-based mental healthcare into effective clinical and public health practice. The mission of the Garvey Institute for Brain Health Solutions he directs is to develop, test, and rapidly deploy innovative approaches to prevent and treat brain health and mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, schizophrenia, addiction, dementia, and suicide that rob millions of individuals of the opportunity to lead healthy and productive lives.

Dr. Unützer earned his MD at Vanderbilt University. His clinical interests include primary care psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine, and health services research.
