Volunteer at Gallardo Symposium 2026
The Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity, together with the UW Retirement Association, invites retired faculty and staff to support emerging OMAD scholars from the UW and 25 participating colleges and universities by volunteering your time at the Gabriel E. Gallardo Research, Student Leadership & Advocacy Symposium. Subject matter expertise is not required for this volunteer opportunity. It is just as important for students to learn how to explain their research to non-experts as it is to explain to experts!
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
- Poster Viewing & Feedback: Review posters, listen to student presentations, and provide feedback on poster design, content delivery, and public speaking. Subject matter expertise is not required.
- Oral Presentation Listening & Feedback: Listen to 6-7 ten-minute presentations, ask questions, and provide feedback on slide design and content delivery. Each presentation will be about ten minutes, with two minutes for Q&A. Subject matter expertise is not required.
- Oral Presentation Moderators: Introduce student speakers, manage Q&A, and ensure the session flows smoothly. There will be 6-7 student speakers in each two-hour session. Each presentation will be about ten minutes, with two minutes for Q&A. You will be joined by a co-moderator who will support the discussion flow, and a student assistant will be present to help manage technology and timing of the session. Subject matter expertise is not required.
Please note: Training and orientation for volunteers will be provided in an online session. Volunteers may attend one of these sessions or view a recording. The orientation sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, April 7 at 2:30 or Friday, April 10 at 10:30 am. You will receive a Zoom link after you have registered to volunteer.
ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM
The Gallardo Symposium is a 3-day conference that includes professional development workshops, a graduate school fair, and a day filled with undergraduate student research presentations. The overarching purpose of the conference is to foster academic and career exploration and to expose students to the power of student research, leadership and advocacy. Students from 25 colleges and universities across the country will travel to Seattle to participate. We anticipate more than 250 student participants. Learn more about the Symposium.
